The portrait in this painting was inspired by a photo of a Syrian refugee that had to flee Syria looking for a better future. Her vague stare is one filled with uncertainty. She is painted in black and white while her surroundings are filled with colors to represent the contrast between a painful past and a hopeful future. The artist used mixed media, a mix of collage and acrylic paint to create a rich and layered piece. She has also used Asian script in the collage to represent the confusion and the unknown of starting a life in a new country with language and culture barriers.

This painting is based on the iconic image of an American woman who was the subject of Dorothea Lange's photograph Migrant Mother during the Great Depression in 1936.
